Refined words near the crude oil towers
One Imagination was highlighted recently in a Los Angeles Times column written by Hector Tobar. Check it out! I heard about this on KPFK 90.7FM while listening to Democracy Now! this morning. This is what was reported:
UC Irvine Bans Muslim Student Union In news from California, officials at the University of California, Irvine, have banned the Muslim Student Union for one year and placed the organization on disciplinary probation for an additional year. In February, members of the group disrupted a speech by Israeli ambassador Michael Oren. Victor Sanchez, president of the University of California Student Association, said he was outraged by the ban. Sanchez said, "It’s almost impossible not to interpret this as a means of the university to silence dissent." http://www.democracynow.org/2010/6/15/headlines Below is a press release by UC San Diego's Students for Justice in Palestine condemning the disciplinary action taken against the UCI 11 and the Muslim Student Union: UCSD SJP Condemns Disciplinary Action Taken Against UCI 11 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Meryem Kamil [email protected] Students for Justice in Palestine, UC San Diego http://sjpucsd.org/ 14 June 2010, La Jolla- The Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) at UCSD condemns the silencing of free speech at University of California, Irvine (UCI). A disciplinary board recently suspended eleven students who had protested the presence of Israeli ambassador Michael Oren on their campus and for his support of Israeli war crimes against the Palestinian people. The Associated Students at UCSD had unanimously passed a resolution in full support of the UCI 11, and also called for the dropping of all academic charges against the protesters. The collective punishment against the Palestinian people committed by Israel's right-wing Likud-government, along violations of over 65 UN resolutions, have already led to a mass condemnation from the international community. The Gaza blockade has been called inhumane and illegal by the Red Cross, the European Union, Amnesty International, and the International Court of Justice. Recently, Israeli soldiers boarded a humanitarian fleet in protected waters (under International Maritime Law), and needlessly injured and killed many of those on board. As spokesperson for the Gaza Massacre, codenamed Operation Cast Lead, Michael Oren is a representative of these actions. He is a representative of a government that defends actions the international community condemns. Free speech is a tenet of American society. At a recent speech punctuated by the shouts of anti-abortion demonstrators, President Obama defended the rights of those protesting: "Some people got organized to do that. That's part of the American tradition we are proud of. And that's hard too, standing in the midst of people who disagree with you and letting your voice be heard." The students who exercised their right to free speech in Irvine did not commit any illegal action. Rather, they took part in a peaceful action reminiscent of Martin Luther King Jr., of the 1986 Olympics, and of the Little Rock Nine. Many of the UCI 11 are of Palestinian descent. Two of the students had multiple family members killed in last year's Israeli bombing of Gaza. To question their right to protest as American citizens is dangerous constitutionally, and to question the validity of their struggle is a demonstration of the lack of diverse narratives taught in our California universities. The actions taken against the eleven students comes in conjunction with a recommendation to suspend the Muslim Student Union (MSU) at UCI. The organization, which represents a significant population at the Irvine campus, puts on a wide variety events that work towards building global humanitarian efforts, supporting a diverse and vibrant campus life, and providing forums for UCI students' campus involvement. Silencing an entire sector of the student population denies Muslim students their right to assemble as a legitimate and recognized organization and removes a key voice from the UCI community. SJP UCSD calls for the immediate reversal of disciplinary actions taken against the UCI 11 and MSU. Furthermore, we demand that UCI, UCSD, and the California educational system re-examine its policy regarding bias, racism, and discrimination on campus. We put our full support behind the UCI 11, MSU, and all those affected. I wonder if a pro-Israeli student group had taken similar action with a Palestinian speaker, if they would have faced such harsh consequences and infringement of their rights to dissent... thoughts? -soul.in.my.fist Join us on Sojourner Truth,Tuesday, April 6th, 7-8 am Hosted by Margaret Prescodon KPFK 90.7FM Los Angeles98.7FM Santa Barbara Or tune in at http://www.kpfk.org/ Tuesday, Southern California youth speak out! In addition to the intense partisanship, the race for the national presidency has also seen an interesting number of key political figures switching over to the other side. I guess, "the grass is greener on the other side" epitomizes this season's national politics. Just recently, Colin Powell voiced his concern for the presidential campaign--stating Obama as the more fit candidate. Despite serving in distinguished roles of national politics for both republican and democrat presidents, his endorsement for this year's election is clear: "Obama," he says, "would be a transformational president." Vote or not, this year's election is one to pay close attention to. -J.GUAVA Unfortunately there aren't many news channels or media outlets [in the mainstream] that provide anything close to sensible coverage of the issues confronting us in the world as a whole... and simply within our own backyards. Our news media serves, instead of being liable sources of information for the general public, an elite group. They work to misinform and spread propaganda already fed to us through our institutions and so called leaders. Therefore it is vital to have some knowledge of alternative media outlets that offer a variety of scope (from the war in Iraq to public education in LA to the music scene in Brasil) and perspectives.
Here are just a few: Al Jazeera an Arabian television network noted for providing dissident views on issues like the Iraqi war and issues in the Middle East. It has gained enemies in America as well as in the countries it serves to inform. Obviously, it has its biases, but it serves as important voice for the Arab community. Indymedia Check this sight out for news story of local grass roots activism usually ignored in the mainstream media. Link TV WAY better than PBS! Pretty much the only American TV station that I know that has original programming, offers different perspectives on global and national news, as well as offering various cultural programs throughout the world (great way to checkout the conscious global music scene). National Public Radio Consider this the radio version of PBS. Except with more news and no Elmo. Press TV An Iranian news station. As Iran is a hotspot right now (future US occupation possibilities) it is important for us to get their side of the story. Reason ...is pretty much the voice of the libertarian. You might not agree with their views but I find Reason to be refreshing when juxtaposed to our homogenized "two" party system of politics that never seems to offer anything new. World News This site gathers articles from news outlets throughout the globe. Even articles about America are many times provided through an outside lens; which can help us see much that we are blind to or would never get to hear in the states. If you know of any more sites that you frequent for your news, please do inform! - Rudy Duriez Propaganda is recognized as a process of spreading information for a specific cause. It is up to the average citizen to decide whether it is ethical or not. However, in order to be an engaged citizen one must analyze the construction of propaganda and the manufacturing of consent. In effect, how has propaganda fabricated half-truths, and what are the effects on driving popular opinion? 1. Makes me feel like I am in a very old classroom. A video on propaganda: "Know the purpose, recognize and judge the purpose and technique" 2. Dead Prez and their perspective on propaganda: 3. Edward Bernays and the foundation of public relations, aka propaganda: "Man's desires must overshadow his needs." This video depicts the creation of an all-American consumer culture. And, also, a chapter from Bernays' book, Propaganda. 4. Propaganda techniques: http://academic.cuesta.edu/acasupp/as/404.htm "Either/or fallacy: This technique is also called "black-and-white thinking" because only two choices are given. You are either for something or against it; there is no middle ground or shades of gray. It is used to polarize issues, and negates all attempts to find a common ground." Sound familiar? Why is propaganda used? "To manipulate the readers' or viewers' reason and emotions; to persuade you to believe in something or someone, buy an item, or vote a certain way." 5. Chomsky's take on propaganda: Propaganda, American-style "For those who stubbornly seek freedom around the world, there can be no more urgent task than to come to understand the mechanisms and practices of indoctrination. These are easy to perceive in the totalitarian societies, much less so in the propaganda system to which we are subjected and in which all too often we serve as unwilling or unwitting instruments." Propaganda "Those others, who are out of the small group, the big majority of the population, they are what Lippmann called "the bewildered herd." We have to protect ourselves from the trampling and rage of the bewildered herd. Now there are two functions in a democracy: The specialized class, the responsible men, carry out the executive function, which means they do the thinking and planning and understand the common interests. Then, there is the bewildered herd, and they have a function in democracy too. Their function in a democracy, he said, is to be spectators, not participants in action. But they have more of a function than that, because it's a democracy. Occasionally they are allowed to lend their weight to one or another member of the specialized class. In other words, they're allowed to say, "We want you to be our leader" or "We want you to be our leader." That's because it's a democracy and not a totalitarian state. That's called an election. But once they've lent their weight to one or another member of the specialized class they're supposed to sink back and become spectators of action, but not participants. That's a properly functioning democracy.
