The eight week program takes place in February and March on Saturdays for four hour intensive sessions of reading, critiquing, writing, editing, performing, teaching, learning, playing, laughing, loving, and growing. The first session is focused on the contemporary history and art of resistance in the U.S. We will be reading/listening/watching work by Langston Hughes, Allen Ginsburg, Claude McKay, Mark Gonzales, I Was Born With Two Tongues, and more.
For the privacy of our youth we won’t be posting up their names, but we have fourteen youth participants signed up from all over Long Beach, Torrance, Compton, Gardena, Wilmington, Carson, and Watts. As far as we know, no such program like Our Word is Our Weapon has existed in this part of LA County, and we are proud to provide this space to nurture the growth of young artistic leaders.
